Overview
Sat. Oct. 9.
Cloudy sky but gradually clearing. M + I took it easy till about 10.30 + then set out for Clifton with Judy in the gig. The weather improved as we went along + by the time we reached Clifton homestead it was sunny + warm. Maud took one 1/2 plate (1) of me in the trap showing the road just beyond Tukituki Bridge, + I took one (1/2 plate) (2) of her in trap on Clifton beach showing the terraced hillside on which we were to have our little picnic. Driving a little way along the beach to the foot of the hill we passed three shepherds + about 20 dogs driving a mob of

Clifton sheep - 2-tooth wethers in splendid condition + carrying magnificient fleeces. Took Judy out + tied her to a tree, + carried our rug, camera, provisions etc. up the hilside to a shady ledge. Had a delicious time together. We had our B-Ss [bathing suits] with us + after lunch treated ourselves to the Adam + Eve Act Scene III - She is so sweet + adorable + being a perfectly nice pair, revelled in each other with mutual confidence, respect + pure love. A rainstorm passed over Napier + Hastings but fortunately we were just beyond its range + only got a few drops. Then we had afternoon tea, discussed inside decoration, tints, etc. of our future home + at last reluctantly tore ourselves away, getting back to Grays Road by 6pm. After tea Beloved + I walked into town, visited the "Oriental" to buy some special nut sundaes + then went to the Pictures. A very good programme which included a series of amusing cartoons + some good war pictures. The star film was "The Stoning" - a picture with a moral. Walked happily home + sat in the drawing room before going to bed.
