Overview
Sun. Aug. 15.
Mr + Mrs Herd + John, Maud + I drove to church. Rev Pratt preached + after service I was introduced to him, also to Miss Young, a friend of Maud's, + had a chat with Laurie. Home to dinner. Took a photo (1/4 pl[ate]) of (1) Maud + I at door of rustic summerhouse at Gray's R[oa]d; (2) Ralph leaning on his bike; + (3) Maud + Hugh shaking hands on front path. At 2.30 Mrs Garnett + her son Harold, called for Maud + I with their lovely Humber car to take us for a trip into country to the west. Maud wore a bewitching black veil tied over a soft hat + her black furs + when she nestled down into the billowy soft cushions + was tucked in with a nice fur rug, she looked like a sweetest little adorable duchess one could imagine. We set out via the Ormond Road, passing thro' Fernhill, Taradale, Greenmeadows + crossing the Ngaroro + Tutaekuri Rivers, we skirted the south side of Ahuriri Lagoon + thence over the

Tutaekuri River delta by the embanked road reached Scinde Island. Turning along Hydrabad Road, we crossed the Long Bridge + traversed the Spit to Petane - continued over Petane Hill to Esk Valley, went down same to coast road + then back to Petane + Napier. A strong sea, with fine breakers, was running as we passed along the Marine Parade. Returned to Grays Road via Pakowai. A most enjoyable drive with peasant friends, a snug + cosy seat + the glorious girl I love alongside me. The distance covered was 52 miles. Spent the evening by a nice fire in the drawing-room discussing our plans + loving each other to our hearts' content.
