Overview
Leslie Adkin continues to work on his father's farm Cheslyn Rise, near Levin. He holds the lease on two other properties, called the North Block and Rear 42, and spends much of his time working to clear and fence them. Other farming activities this month include pulling foxgloves, laying drains, shepherding, docking, dagging, and attending stock sales.
Leslie works with his father William, his brothers Gilbert and Clifford, and their farm labourer Andy. Contract workers assist with ploughing and shearing.
In September, Leslie secured a loan with Dalgety and Co. which allowed him to lease the Rear 42 and provided the funds necessary to build a house on the property. This month construction of the house commences, and Leslie begins purchasing furniture and fittings.
Towards the end of the month, he travels to Wellington with his fiancee Maud Herd and her mother, and as well as making a number of social calls the trio purchase lino, mats, wallpapers, tiles, and 'door furniture.' Leslie gets fitted for a new suit, which he will wear to his wedding in December, and purchases a ring.
