Overview
Leslie Adkin continues to work on his father's farm Cheslyn Rise, near Levin. He is also the manager of a separate property called the North Block, and he spends much of his time there. Farming activities this month include cutting scrub, firing areas of bush, sowing grass, mustering and drafting, dipping, dagging, and attending stock sales. Leslie works with his father William, his brothers Gil (Gilbert) and Clif (Clifford), and their farm labourers Andy and Scott (Robert Scott). A contract worker assists with ploughing and drilling turnips.
In his spare time Leslie enjoys reading novels and taking photographs. He is also a regular church-goer.
Leslie's fiancee Maud Herd lives in Hastings with her family, but the two correspond regularly. This month, much to his delight, Maud sends Leslie a box of butterscotch and 'the sprightliest letter she has ever written.'
In addition to his usual diary entries about the farm, his family, and his photography, Leslie writes frequently of the war in Europe. This month he gives updates on the fighting in East Prussia and the progress of the Franco-British warships in the Dardanelles. He also notes the French victory at Vauquois and the surrender of Przemysl to Russian forces.
