Lovely clear morning. Up at 6.45 - after

quick breakfast took camera + climbed Narby's spur overlooking Stuckey's Side of Mill p[addock] + took a photo of all my spurs from Narby's boundary to the Ohau flat showing second "burn" on hilltop, etc. Returned to whare + set out to explore the 2nd "burn". Went up via Main Spur shepherding cattle + ewes en route - noticed a lot of the latter lame. Found the southern end of the "burn" as far as top of Main Wedge Spur very good indeed + the line of the future boundary fence so well burned that clearing for the fence will be comparatively easy. Noted plenty of hinau logs handy. Beyond top of Main Wedge Spur past the Trunk Spur the "burn" is only fair + near the top of Leighton's Spur it is almost as bad as it could be + the future bdy [boundary] fence-line for 4 or 5 chains from the 1st "burn" will be simply awful to clear - unburned timber + boughs + rubbish being piled up many feet. A rough estimate is: Very good "burn" 9 acres; fair "burn" 7 acres

very bad "burn" 9 acres = total 25 acres. I came upon three wild pigs on edge of "burn" + also heard a queer clapping noise in the bush. Returned to whare via Leighton Spur, putting around 20 ewes back on the South End whence they had drifted. After dinner loafed about Mill Site collecting nails + generally amusing myself. Home about 4pm. Church in evening.
