Overview
Leslie Adkin continues to work on his father's farm Cheslyn Rise, near Levin. He is also the manager of a separate property called the North Block, and he spends much of his time there. Farming activities this month include cutting scrub, laying drains, firing areas of bush, mustering and drafting, drenching, and attending stock sales. Leslie works with his father William, his brothers Gil (Gilbert) and Clif (Clifford), and their farm labourers Andy and Scott (Robert Scott). A contract worker assists with scrubbing and oat-cutting.
In his spare time Leslie enjoys reading novels and taking photographs. His fiancee Maud Herd is visiting from Hastings for most of this month, and the couple spend many evenings planning their future home and garden. They also attend a number of social events and worship together at the local church.
In addition to his usual diary entries about the farm, his family, and his photography, Leslie also writes frequently of the war in Europe. This month he records the attempted invasion of Egypt by Turkish forces, the German army's attempt to blockade Britain, and the German advance into East Prussia.
