Overview
Leslie Adkin continues to work on his father’s farm Cheslyn Rise, near Levin. He is also the manager of a separate property called the North Block, and he spends much of his time there. Farming activities this month include shepherding, docking, laying drains, clearing tracks and fence lines, fencing, pulling foxgloves, and selling stock. Leslie works with his father William, his brother Gil (Gilbert), and a number of farm labourers. Progress on the North Block is slow, and this month Leslie admits that there “is always something to worry one after a big day’s work + give one a depressed feeling for the evening.”
In his spare time Leslie enjoys reading novels and taking photographs. He also corresponds regularly with his fiancee Maud Herd, who lives with her family in Hastings. This month Leslie notes that he has received a "strange and most distressing note" from her, but does not mention whether or not the situation was resolved.
In addition to his usual diary entries about the farm, his family, and his photography, Leslie also writes frequently of the war in Europe. This month the major news is the bombardment and evacuation of Antwerp, and Leslie notes the “terrible details” of those “piteous scenes.”
