Overview
This Chinese outfit was worn by Elisabeth Joyce Campbell, known as Betty Campbell. Betty was born in China and lived in Tientsin, with her parents Roy and Freda Peill who were missionaries there.
Betty also went to school in China but later was educated in England and Switzerland. The outfit represents the early life and unique experences of Betty as a young girl in China.
Later in her life Betty became an important figure in New Zealand history. She was part of the Plunket Society and more significantly a key person in the 'Federation of New Zealand Parents' Centres. This group advocated for antenatal education of mother and fathers. She joined the Wellington Hospital Board in 1965 with the specific aim of 'humanising' childbirth, enabling fathers to be present at births, liberalising visiting times especially in children's wards. She was also part of the Wellington City Council in the 1960s - 80s. She was awarded an MBE.
