Tues. Dec. 21.
Our last morning in New Plymouth. Early breakfast to catch mail train at 7.30. On the journey down we did not get a glimpse of Egmont, clouds covering the peak. We went to dining-car for lunch but could only get two single seats one at each end of the car so had our meal separate. Terribly hot day. Reached Palmerston North at 3.15 - cloudless sky + blazing sun - put up at the Railway Hotel for night. Went for a walk round Square to see shops + also visited the gardens in same - these were very tame after New Plymouth.
