Overview
Wed. Dec. 15.
Left for Palmerston North by 9.6 am train, getting out on north side of Square + walking to station past the shops. Had dinner on the station + left for New Plymouth by mail train at 12.10 pm. Talked, read, laughed + fed + were so happy but sleepy. The journey was rather monotonous as regards scenery as far as Aramaho Junction. Got glimpse of sea + many little lakes. After Wanganui up to Patea such fine stretches of farming country. Patea a miserable hole. Stratford the largest place. Got a magnificent view of Egmont with sun sitting beyond + tinting the mountain a lovely pink - the apex of the cone was snowy + a line of cloud cut across about half-way up the peak. Arrived New Plymouth about 8 pm + took a cab to Imperial Hotel where they expected us. We were put into bedroom 24 which is to be out little Olympian retreat for a week - Angel + the great god Lesle, or in other words (Maud's version) "Dew" + "Wee Droppie".
