Overview
Thurs. Dec. 16.
Our first impression of New Plymouth was that it is a very dingy, smoky town but later we found that only applies to the part between the main street + the railway station - the other parts of the town are really quite beautiful. The main street, Devon St., has rather a curious appearance due to the fact that it runs from a flat topped terrace or hill at one end, accross a broad dip up on to a similar flat-topped hill as the other. The Post Office is a fine building well situated on the elevation at the western end of Devon Street. After breakfast we went for our first honeymoon walk - down to railway station, along embowered path above beach to Kawaroa Park. Took a photo of (1) Railway Station + cliffs beyond from the path to Kawaroa Park; (2) Maud on the pathway (3) self on ditto. Visited the baths + sat alongside a path on the lupin-covered slope over-looking the sea + in distance the fascinating Sugarloaves + Breakwater Harbour. Photo (4) of Sugarloaves + B. Harbour from Kawaroa Park. Wandered thro' park on way back to Hotel for dinner. Rested during afternoon + later walked along to St. Mary's Church - a fine historic building massively
[page break]
built of grey volcanic rock + containing regimental hatchments + other interesting relics of the Maori Wars, also went to top of Marsland Hill. In evening walked as far as Pukekura Park + even in the dark got some idea of its sylvan beauty.
