Worked at pipe-drains in Cow p[addock]. In evening rode down to see Mr. Whitaker re roofing material for our future home. He suggested a "ruberoid" roof + corrugated iron on top of it later when the price goes down to normal. A great difficulty solved. Saw Mr. W[hitaker]'s kitchen arrangement - hot water boiler on floor alongside range + linen cupboard above boiler which automatically airs the linen. He also recommended the use of asbestos sheets for inside finishing instead of papering. He thought £400 would put up a good little house after Mr. Herd's plan - was against corner fireplaces + thought the bedrooms too small.
