Sat. Feb. 27.
Father, Andy, Scott,Gil + I rode up to North Block + continued scrubbing on Stuckeys [sic] side of Mill p[adock] south of Styles [sic] Creek. After dinner Father, Andy + I rode up to the 2nd burn on hilltop to fire missed patches. Found a terrible mess - about the worst burn one could imagine especially at the northern end. The fire only ran through here and there leaving huge masses on [sic] timber, twigs and even leaves. We tried to fire some of the denser unburned patches,but it would not burn. The main track leading from top of Leighton Spur to 1st burn is blocked by a huge partially-burned rata. Went on to 1st burn + fired some of the big ratas which burned down last year. For all the good we did, we might have stayed below - the clearing of the line for the back boundary fence will be an awful job - almost impossible. On returning to Mill p. we found the man Scott loafing + the new hook slasher broken - so on the whole it was a pretty rotten day. On way home called at Uncle Bert's for the litte bob-tailed pup which I am to pay 7/6. Another sweltering hot night.
