Overview
Wed. Feb. 24
Up early - dull morning - glass rising. Said good-bye to darling Maud who returns home today. Father, Gil, Andy, Clif + I rode up to North Block to muster my ewes + lambs + to fire bush. Mustered Leighton p[addock] + sound end in 3 hours. Put sheep on Mill p. During dinner at whare the sun came out, so we went up to fire bush, each taking stations along the west edge; - self taking sound end; Andy the gully south of Main Wedge Spur; Father + Clif top Trunk Spur; Gil, wedge spur bet[ween] Trunk + Leighton's Spurs. I put the first torch in at 1.30pm. The fire did not burn too well at first, the sun being again behind clouds + it looked as if parts would be left unburned. However a good wind was blowing so the greater part of surface was swept it seemed except at top Leightons [sic] Spur where I went to torch after firing south end. The fire spread till about 5 pm when the wind dropped + we left job to itself, rather disappointed as there seems to be a terrible lot of timber and rubbish left. The others returned home + I hung a new gate at main entance to Leighton p. After dark some ratas + many other stumps + burning logs, lit up the hilltop, but burn is, I fear, a very poor one.
