Dick + I rode up to the 1st "burn" on hilltop + continued the track northward for about 3 chains along the crest of the ridge. Big logs to saw up and huge amount of lesser debris. Started sawing a monster hinau log on track + for posts. We started to clean the bdy [boundary] fence-line but gave up on acc[ount] of impossible am[oun]t of unburned bush - we will have to start further north than opposite the top of Leighton's Spur + hope that this seasons fire fill clear up the mess. Rode to Levin in evening. The Alies [sic] have made marked progress in Northern France + the German offensive has been checked. Farther Russion victories in Russian Poland.
