Dull windy day. Worked at the new system of future pipe drains in Cow p[addock] on CK p. fence-line. Spent rest of morning shepherding + after dinner Father + I rode up to South Block to move ewes. Auntie Ralph arrived to stay with us. Received news of the most terrible event in the war since Liegé - the bombardment of Antwerp + its evacuation by the terror-stricken populace + the Belgium Army. The Germans poured shells, including terrible incendiary shells, into the city for 40 hours. Assisted by British naval brigade the Belgians returned to Ostend. A million Russians are advancing on Berlin via Thorn + Posen. Lyck occupied by Russians + 10000 Germans + 40 guns captured.
