Overview
Thurs. Jan 28. [29]
Cycled down to 8.36am train + went to Waikanae to attend Kelson's clearing sale. Father came up from W'gton [Wellington]. No conveyance turning up, we had to walk the two miles to the farm. Luncheon (?) was provided but was absolutely rotten owing to lack of management, nothing being ready. The sale was conducted by Loan + Mercantile Co. Breeding ewes fetched fabulous prices :- 2-tooths 18/3; 4-tooths 18/1; 6-tooths 17/-; 4+5 y[ea]r ewes 14/-; so we could not get any for North Bl[oc]k.
Father bought the tops of wether hoggarts [sic]
[page break]
(324) at 8/1 - probably the bargain of the day. Ewe hoggarts [sic] 11/-; shore 2-tooth wethers 16/3; fat shorn wethers 19/9. Arranged with H. O'Donnell to deliver hoggarts [sic] on Sunday morning for £2. Another drover took them (for 5/-) to Waikanae saleyards where they will stay till Saturday morning. Father + I walked back to Waikanae + had tea at "Mahara House" - he returned to Wgton [Wellington] by 4.40 train. I walked back to river + had a bathe - found some delightful, well trodden tracks in bush beside the river at the back of Mr. Elder's house. Caught the 6.30 pm train to Levin - Dora + Clare returning by same. Very hot, sultry day.
