Overview
Sun Nov 16
Got leave for the day – pass signed by Capt. Warren – attended morning service at Wesley Church. Met “Fern Hill” folk, but they were afraid to ask me to dinner in case of retaliation from strikers, + this is spite of fact that the strikers have been like lambs

for the past week – it is remarkable what miserable cowards some city people develop into. Not wishing to return to Barracks, I wandered down town + picked up a snack at a second-rate restuaurant. Bought some photos of strike at Zak’s. Spent rest of afternoon at the Public Library + returned to camp at 5 pm prior to tea. Bought green-hide bridle (less bit) at 13/6. Permanent leave has been granted to 143 “specials” to-morrow – this number included 5 Levin men : – Ivor + Fred Barty [Bartholomew], Curtis, Simpson + self. Other men have come into camp from country to keep up the number.
[leave pass referred to is glued on page with entries for Nov 16 and Nov 17]
