On parade at 8 am – “F” Sqadron fell out of main lot going to wharves into yard at Te Aro Rly [Railway] Station. After a couple of hours wait, we were divided into patrols of 8 to 12 men each. My patrol had for its beat :– Willeston St, Lambton quay, Whitmore St, + Custom H[ouse] quay. Showers of rain. To-day our Squadron returned to camp to dinner. a flood-plain – partly grassy + partly gravelly – makes its appearance. Further down there is a high-level terrace about 18 ft above the present stream-bed. The terrace is composed of angular gravel. In several places on the hillsides in the lower part of the valley, there are what appear to be remains of a massive + ancient + very high-level terrace perhaps 150 ft above the present stream-bed. The hills which surround the valley are also said to be flat-topped. After riding into the surf we returned to camp by same route as outward journey. Re-read “Treasure Island”.
