of fence – found that Edwards is having his boundary fence erected from NE corner of North Blk to SE ditto of his own – a very rough line. Could see that Grange had started felling on top of Leighton’s Spur so cut through bush along top of ridge + found my way out to where he was working – found that job progressing favourably. Three steers were in bush at Grange’s job – they were very tame + let me put my hands on them. Descended Leighton’s Spur to horse – the pup followed me the whole way up range + through bush proving himself a plucky little chap. Had lunch and rode to south paddock to see UR ewes (180 of them) + found them in splendid order though feed is very short. Had a look at spurs running down to “dirty flat” to find one suitable for a graded horse-track to top of hill. On return home received note from Maud asking me to go down as

she wished to see me urgently. Cycled down after tea. She looked very nice but gave me the discomforting news that the family is to leave Levin in a couple of months time. This is a terrible blow + I don’t know how I will get along without her – know well enough that I with miss her dreadfully. Spent a precious evening with her – we do love each other + the parting will be hard to bear. “Thy will be done”.
