Tues May 27
Put in another lot of cyclone fence in CK p[addock] (west end) cutting off about 1 ½ acres of swedes. Drafted the CK p. hoggarts putting weak ones forward on to new cut + rest back on shells. Surprise party in evening – same old crowd for most part Mrs Cork + family, the Bartys [Bartholomews?] etc etc. The prettiest girl present was a Miss Fanny Urquahart of Wgtn [Wellington] + staying with the Corks – she was got up in brown – hair, dress, eyes + all. Games, music + dancing. Pleasant evening – all appeared to enjoy themselves but for me there was something lacking. The party broke up at 1.30 am.
