Mustered 23 bullocks from sect[ion] 37 + Terrace + put 8 best forward on to 2nd 15 ac[re] paddock. Also got up 14 fat + forward heifers for Bulliman to see. Lovely clear afternoon. Jim + I rode down to Perkins’ farm on the Beach Road to get a cow in milk bought by Father for £8.15.0. In evening cycled down to Bruce Road + drove with Maud + some of the others to a school concert at Ohau. This time it was not quite so awful an affair as last year but was bad enough. Maoris formed greater part of audience. Items by school children. An old gentleman named Hawker clad in a top hat, a large button-hole + a suit which was probably the height of fashion 20 years ago gave some recitations – the audience applauded him in their usual rude style + after Maud’s item (a violin solo) she met the old chap behind the stage – he said to her “a low country audience” + appeared highly disgusted. The noble Henderson was MC + once more inflicted

us with his absolutely cruel song “Allister McAllister” rendered in his usual inimitable style. Maud looked lovely but she does not care for compliments. Stayed to supper at Bruce Road.
