A lovely fine day. Visited the Union S.S. Co s offices + got a berth allotted in the Mararoa which sails tonight. Took tram to North Beach old sand dunes lie about ½ mile from the coast, then there are good flats + then a belt of modern dunes which are at N Beach are of drifting sand along the strip about 5 chns [chains] wide. The tram then ran down to Brighton pier on a line just inside a foredune of bare sand. Houses now extend right from N. Beach to the pier + beyond it southward. Alighted at pier + walked on the

beach a few bathers + a few people on the sands. Took the N Brighton tram back to town this long ride, out + back, cost 6d. Visited a second-hand book-shop opp the Sun office + purchased a sound copy of Julius von Haast s Geology of Canterbury + Westland for 30/. Packed a parcel of books + geol specimens + posted them to Levin. Settled up at hotel, 48/. for the 8 days, + spent p.m. reading Shadows of the Flames by Amelie Reeves. Photos ¼ (44 + 45) The clock tower from the Excelsior Hotel. Caught the 5:20 p.m. boat-train to Lyttelton. On board the Mararoa met Miss Mestayer + had a long chat as she is very friendly Dr Cockayne, Dr Cotton + Lomas also going north. A lovely evening at Lyttelton but we ran into cloudy weather outside the heads.
