Completed business, including taking the marble clock (Grandma's wedding-present to Maud + self) to station. Dined at Fern Hill + caught the 4.15pm train home. Clif met me with the trap. The car is at present partly under water in the bed of the Waikawa River. Clare + Viv drove out to Kingdon's farm which is stiuated on thesouth sideof the Waikawa out on the sandhills. They took by mistake a wrong road running alongside the river + were finally pulled up by a sand-dune. Viv got out + Clare tried to turn the car + while doing so, it leaped over a 15ft bank into the river.Clare was

entangled in the hood, which was smashed as the car sumersaulted, + was pinned under the water + would have drowned but for the fine promptness of Vivian who plunged in fully clothed + pulled her out. Mr Kingdon finally picked them up in his car + brought them home, + later Clare retuned to stay with Mrs Kingon for a few days rest. Tea at Cheslyn Rise.
