Last night we decided to retunr home unless the weather cleared by 10 am. Also a note was left on our table last night waying a Mr Herd would call on us at 7.45 am. I was unable to decide whether it would be

Will who is being invalided bak to NZ or Hugh who has beento ChCh [Christchurch] for a holiday. It proved to be Mr Herd senr[senior] who had come down to meet Will. Will was with him + looked very pale but otherwise fairly fit - he suffered a slight wound in France, a touch of gas +,worst or all, shell shock. They go up to Hastings by the 9.10 train + Clif + I went down to see themoff.John Herd was also there + we walked back with him + walked thro' the Supreme Court where he is employed. Tookopportunity to sit in the chair of the Chief Justice. By this time the weather was clearing. Clif + I thenvisited Fern Hill + saw Grandma + Aunts Edna + Kate. The weather was now beautifully clear so decided to stay on, + getting camera from P[eople's] P[alace] we went up to Kelberne[sic]. Continued up Salamanca Road + through Botanical Gardens to Astronomical Observatory kiosk etc. 1/4 pl photos (14) of Kiosks + powerhouse + (15) Astron[omical] + Meteorogical Observatorys + Tinakori Range + Wireless Stn [Station] beyond. Lunched at Kiosk + walked through the Gardens to tram on Tinakori Road. 1/4 pl phosos (16) + (17) in Botanical Gardens. Went in tram as far as the Viaduct - 1/2 pl photo (18) looking down Tinakori Road to Kelberne Kiosk + descended to Quay in Cable tram/ Left 1/2 pl camber at P.P. + trammed out to Island Bay. 1/4 pl photo (19) of the beach - boats in foreground - + diving stage. Clif went in for a bather while I took the photos + later I went in - water very cold + standingon beach much warmer - a goodswim+ dived several times off stage. Returned to the P.P. fortea. Just as she was

leaving the P.P. I asked a young lady whom we had nicknamed the "plumber's daugher" if she would care to be escorted to an entertainment. She looked [at] me haughtily up + down + said in a muffled but musical voice "Not with you". A few moments later a gentleman met her evidently by appointment so I "just kept on walking". Later Clif + I went to Everybody's Theatre - star film "It Happened to Adele", also "Lonesome Luke, the Plumber"; this was thenext to funniest film I've everseen, so we had a good time - suppedbeforereturning to bed.
