Overview
Feb. 1. Thurs.
Over to Cheslyn Rise. Marked Father's 35 yearling steers (the £5.10.0 lot) with raddle + linseed oil + drove them up to South Block. Shepherded S. Blk + found the ewe hoggarts [sic] + cattle doing splendidly in spite of dryness. In pm the strong east wind blew up rain which increased during pm + ended the drought as far as the valley is concerned. At 2.30 rode up to Sonoma on Silvermane - sledged logs away from big shed + snigged two iron rails from down the river up to Ram p[addock] - I expect to use these as anchors for a live willow protection to the eroded part of river-

bank by Ram p. Log fires on hills are still burning merrily but sawdust + old mill-site are quenched + my two buildings safe for the time being.
