Overview
Sat. Dec. 18.
Drizzly rain so Darling + I spent the morning in our own room resting. It is perfectly beautiful to see Her in bed in her sweet nightie - she looks adorable, feels so soft + nice + is

beautifully loving. Also she declares I am a most adorable, tender + considerate husband - so our happiness is complete. After dinner she again rested while I went for a walk - to Railway Stn., Photo (10) West End Cliffs + rly [railway] cutting from mouth of Huatoki Stream, along beach, past Huatoki Stream + past the yellow cliffs which here stand at high-tide mark. These cliffs consist of clay with a band of conglomerate at base - the latter has been eroded by the sea into recesses + small cones, so the cliff is somewhat undercut. The beach is sandy with volcanic boulders lying on the low tide line. I walked as far as the point from which one can see the mouth of the Hinui River + then struck inland, examined the long narrow cutting by which the railway enters New Plymouth + then returned to our hotel. Photo (11) of main street showing I. Hotel + Post Office. By this time Maudie felt refreshed, so we went up to Pukukura Park in a taxi. This is a great beauty spot, such lovely little lakes + gorgous tree-ferns. On the lower pond there is a great crowd of ducks of various kind + these crowded round keeping a keen lookout for titbits. I took a photo (12) of Maud feeding them, also one (12) of the lower lake from the adjacent hillside. Walked past

the Lily Pond to Upper Lake. Sat in band-stand + took a photo (14) of the lake. While walking round this lake, Maudie suddenly became very sick so we hurried back to town + visited our little friend, Whiskers, + got so. medicine to relieve her - happily this took effect at once so we were able to go to the Pictures in the evening. The star film was "The Jockey of Death", very interesting + thrilling. On return to hotel lay in bed + attempted to eat a huge tea cake each. One of the most thrilling things is to wake up in the night + to see her sleeping beside me, + when I kissed her, a cool soft arm curled round my neck + a sleepy voice whispered "Darling" - she must have done it in her sleep because she could remember nothing of it in the morning.
