Overview
Fri. June. 4.
After breakfast I had a long talk with Mr. Herd + gave him a full acc[ount] of my business affairs and my position in connection with the War + asked his advice + opinion. He was most kind, treating me as if I were his own son, + gave me excellent advice + opened up many new ideas for me, showing me what I have been trying to puzzle out for some time past, viz. how to raise money to build a house + get settled down. I gained considerable am[oun]t of business knowledge from the chat + was very much indebted to him. After dinner the sun came out so Maud + I drove down to the Rauparu Road farm + walked thence down to edge of Ngaruroro River. Sat under the

willows for some time + Maud took a photo of me there, "The Babe in the Wood" she called it. Returned to Grays Road - Gerty + Rona Kitchen drove down to station to meet Alice - on return Alice fell while getting out of trap + the wheel went over her leg, only severely bruising it fortunately but she was unable to go back to her duties at Napier Hospital till Monday. Maud + I walked up to Lawrie's home for tea + spent a very pleasant evening with him + Aunt Nell. L. + I inspected the garden by the aid of a bicycle lamp - it is a very charming home. Maud + I left about 9 + were thus able to spend a happy hour in the drawing room before bedtime.
