Overview
Wed. Mar. 10.
Father, Andy, Scott + I rode up to North Block to cut scrub + if possible fire the scrub on the terraces in Mill p[addock] above Gladstone Road. Cloudy sky till midday. Continued cutting pungas + wineberry on Stuckey's Side at foot of hill up to a swampy stream. While having lunch at whare, the sun came out nice + bright + gave us our chance. At at 1 pm I fired the small patches of cut scrub + stumps on Kopje + they went well. At 1.30 the four of us fired the scrub on terraces, working from the main Leighton p. gate up Gladstone Road to little L[eighton] p. gate + then back down the Leighton's p. fence-line. The dryness of the ground and the bright sun made the fire go spendidly - it roared up the faces + we got a fine clean burn. About 2.30 I went up on to Leighton's Spur + did some more firing on the side spurs running down to "Gilbert's" track. On acc. of the fires on the Kopje being so close to whare I stayed up for the night to keep guard + spent the evening logging up round the whare. At 7.45 rain commenced and lasted as a heavy continuous downpour all night.
