Up at 5.10am + rode in search of missing steer finally finding what I took to be he with other cattle in Mr Carter's paddock on Arapaepae R[oad] - sent a message to Mr Carter by a man who

happened to be going to Shannon. After breakfast branded my 30 steers + Clif + I drove them up to South End of North Block - mustered 8 of the 13 big steers off S[outh] End to Mill p[addock]. Found the Ohau River gate left open by a Maori + a dead ewe on Ohau Flat. Did not like the look of the ewes and lambs today. On way home we found 7 wild pigs on Gladstone Road opp[osite] settling tanks - six ran up Arapaepae Range + the seventh rushed past us up the road - I gave chase, dismounted, knifed it, shinned it + finally cut its throat, old Togo + Scott assisting in great style. It was a sow + 45 inches from snout to root of tail.
