to Levin sale held today on acc[ount] of Palmerston Show on Friday. Very big yarding of cattle + did not sell. Father + I bought a line of 48 15 to 18 months steers at £3.7.0 to divide self to take 30 + Father 18. Lost one on way home, quite inexplicable. Drafted remainder in cattle yards: I picked 3 then father 2 + self 3 + so on. Went back to Levin in search of missing one, but no luck. Fall of German fortress at Tsing-tau in China. In the sea fight off Valparaiso in Chile, the German cruisers "Sharnhorst" [Scharnhorst], "Gneisinau" [Gneisenau] + "Nurnburg" [Nurnberg] out-ranged the Brit[ish] ships + sank the "Good Hope", the "Monmount" [Monmouth] was damaged + sent aground + the "Glasgow" escaped. Continued fierce fighting in Belgium - Germans repulsed + fall back. Huge Russian victory in Galicia.
