After hayfeeding, I took cart upriver + picked up 340 ft of 4 x1 1/8 O.B. hinau (53 pieces 12 to 20 ft in length) for gates on North Block - of this Father pays for 80 ft. On arrival I attended to the ewe found caught in

lawyer yesterday + got her walking about after some trouble. Then carted three loads of boulders from in and about sheep-yards to lower of the two boggy crossings on back up to Leighton p[addock] gate. Started cutting up timber for sheep-yard gates. Left at 4.15 + on way home picked up rest of timber (170 ft.) on Gladstone Road at Mill. A glorious clear fine day. Mr. Hodson up in evening. Received parcel of toffee from dearest Maud. Reported surrender of German general with three army corps. Rapid northward retreat of German line in France - Crown Prince hard pressed. Heavy concentration of Germans at Brussels. Russian army in Austris a day's march from Przemysl + expect to be in Vienna in middle October. Japanese cavalry invading Kaio-chau. Terrible German atrocities.
