Fine hot day. Anstice + I rode up to North Blk to camp. Called in at Willie Stewart’s to offer him my store pig + saw his water-wheel which works his milking machines. It is 10 ft in diam[eter] + about 2 ft wide – a shaft with small cog wheel on side of water-wheel and drives the vacuum pump. He has constructed a dam or pond supplied by the water race + two flumings conduct the water on to the wheel which is of the undershot type. The whole mechanism appears to work very smoothly + will cost nothing for upkeep but would have been better if the main wheel had have been 4ft wide. On arrival [at] North Block I shepherded the Mill p[addock] + worked at sheep-y[ar]ds – put up netting for internal fences – cut battens at woodpile of old mill + put them on. Also collected 8 inch boards etc for dagging pen. After work completed putting corrugated iron on roof of my whare. In evening read “Old St Pauls”.
