Sat. July. 18.
A wet day. Anstice + I rode round stock + I used the young horse for first time. After dinner worked at pipe-drains. At 3.30 Father found Gil's horse, Taffy, in the big drain in the Cow p[addock] + we had a big job getting him out as he had evidently been in for 24 hrs or so. Dug round him, hauled on rope round neck with old "Maori", put timber behind him, got rope round his body + hauled him out, weak but able to walk. Hay-fed cows, etc. in dark.
