Overview
Leslie Adkin continues to work on his father’s property Cheslyn Rise, near Levin, although he is now the manager of the North Block and spends much of his time there. He often camps in a rough whare on the property, and with the help of a farm labourer named Anstice works to cut tracks, split posts and make battens for fences, clear paddocks, and erect sheep-yards. This month Leslie pays £35 for the first quarter’s rent.
On the home farm, Leslie works with his father William, his brother Gil (Gilbert), Anstice, and other farm labourers. This month’s farming activities include laying pipe drains, drenching, crutching, shepherding, top-dressing, and setting up wind breaks.
In his spare time Leslie enjoys reading novels and going to the pictures, and this month he also attends a number of talks and lectures on various political issues.
Sad news comes on the 17th, when the family learns of the passing of Grandpa Adkin. On the 26th Leslie celebrates his 26th birthday, and spends the day developing photographs. He attends a church service in the evening, followed by a stroll and a cigarette with his uncles Bert and Percy.
Winter sets in this month, and Leslie notes bitterly cold frosts and snow on the nearby Tararua Ranges.
