Overview
Mon. Mar. 2
Maud and I decided to spend the day at Riverslea on the 'old' Ngaruoro R. We drove out via Havelock + first visited "Iona" College situated on the Havelock Hills + commanding a fine view of the Heretaunga Plain. The College itself only, recently opened, is a magnificent building. I took

a photo (16) of the Heretaunga Plain from Iona College showing Maud in trap in foreground. Returning to Havelock took a photo (17) of the pretty Anglican church + then we went a couple of miles along the Napier Road to Riverslea. A side road runs down to a ford on the 'old' Ngaruoro + here in the shade of an ancient willow-tree we took "Judy" out of trap + settled down. The river is too dirty, sluggish + weedy for bathing so we had lunch + during afternoon talked, were nice to each other + Maud also read to me. Took a photo (18) of the ford + (19) Maud beside river showing reflections. Maud took a photo of me (20) sitting on a stump under some pine trees. Maud was wearing her cream dress with blue facings. Spent a very enjoyable time + started for home at 3.10pm. Reached Hastings at 4 - Maud did some shopping + I took her in for ice cream sodas. Called on Lawrie at his new offices in the

Tribune Building. On return home found that the ring had arrived + on trying it on Maud found it [to] be the right size at last - so now we are really properly and truly engaged. In evening a few friends came in - Mrs + Mrs Kitchen + family, Miss Wallace + Lawrie. Musical items and games - a very pleasant evening. Maud wore her "paisley" dress - cream with purple flowered ribbon down front - + looked charming. After the "ball" Maud + I had our usual on the drawing room sofa.
