Sat. Feb. 27. [28]
In the morning Maud + I drove up to Mr Hind's farm. A traction engine drawing a trussing machine was at work converting a large stack of barley straw into trusses for transport - trussed straw is worth about 45/- per ton. The operation is an interesting one so we watched it for some time. I took two photos (10) a general view of the trussing operations + (11) a nearer view. Mr. Herd is now running some fine big 3 1/2 y[ea]r bullocks + a couple of hundred 2-tooth wethers - both lots to be fattened. Maud took a photo (12) of me standing beside a willow tree with some of the withers in the background. Recently Mr Herd had a new artisan well put down to depth of 70 f[ee]t + got a splendid flow of water. We picked up Ralph + Will who were erecting a fence + drove them home. Maud + I amused ourselves by studying different styles of houses with the idea of getting hints for our future home

She has got excellent taste I think + I'm sure we'll have a most lovely time together. In the afternoon, I tried some indoor photo slides of dearest Maud :- (13) "A Siesta" after Harrison Fisher (asleep on the sofa, just head + shoulders) (14) In Bathing Costume + Cap + (15) "Off to the Opera" ie. standing in hall in evening dress + fascinator, + picking up her opera cloak as if just about to depart. In evening we walked into town "to see the sights" - indulged in ice-cream sodas. I had to go to a chemist's to see about some water I got into my ear while bathing - to see Maud sitting in a chair in the shop waiting for me was heavenly - her eyes a brilliant blue as they usually are at night, sparkled + danced + her cheeks were flushed to a lovely colour. She was wearing a navy skirt, white silk blouse + sweet straw hat. The sight of her made me feel quite delirious with joy + the three chemists were positively frantic with envy - of that

I'm satisfied. And she is mine - surely I'm a "darling of fortune." She took my arm on the way home + I fairly trod the air.
