Thurs. Feb. 19.
Father, Jim, Anstice, Gil + I rode up to North Block + finished cutting belt of scrub from summit of East Low Hill to foot of Skyline spur. After dinner we took torches + walked up to the Ohau Summit + at 1.50pm fired scrub + narrow strip of bush to north of the Summit. Patches of fern burned well but wineberry + other shrubs (though cut) refused to burn so the fire was a failure + the place will need a terrible lot of logging up. The big summit rata did not take fire. After work rode over to whare in Mill p[addock]. Collected some odds + ends of timber including some pieces of jarrah left over from new suspension bridge over Makahika also investigated the other whare beside Gladstone Road + found it a fairly good building containing two bunks + some rough furniture + utensils etc. Home late so turned in early in evening.
