Overview
Sun Nov 9
Slept in this morning but got under hose as usual. After breakfast Tom Vincent, Ralston + I got passes from authorities + taking batons under coats attended Wesley Church. Rev Chapman preached – after service saw Aunt Edie, Uncle Rob, Agnes, Amy + others. Returned for camp for dinner but went without for a change – very sleepy to-day. In afternoon our troop + also several others rode out horses to exercise at Island Bay. Stiff breeze – great growth of settlement – there as [sic] some interesting physiographic features at Island Bay – the island consists of a raised sea-cut rock platform surmounted by a central monadrock + on the seaward side by uplifted skerries. The adjacent mainland coast has the

same rock platform running from the sea-margin to the foot of the old sea-cliffs now some chains inland. The numerous gullies opening into the cliff faces terminate abruptly + are perched at various heights above the beach. There are some good photos to be obtained here. We rode round the Queen’s Drive to Lyell Bay – saw the “Devon” wreck on Pencarrow Head. Rode along beach + Lyell Bay + let horses roll – a big crowd of city present in spite of cold wind + dull sky. Left for camp at 3.30 pm. Read “John of Gerisan” by John Oxenham.
