Jim + I rode up to North Block to cut line for east boundary fence. Left horses on Ohau river-bed + climbed to summer ˆ (“rata tree”) of hill. Found scrub on edge of bush very tall + thick. We made our way to a crooked rata on line on slope between “rata-tree” summit + Ohau River – from this point I took a line with compass (198 1/2°) down to Ohau – between crooked rata + summit I had to make a deviation into block to get clear of a stony gully which here…

coincides with fence-line. We started cutting scrub for line above the crooked rata + in middle of deviation (at x) +

and being joined by Father, Gil + Bob Anstice cut line right down to cliff at Ohau River. The gradients on the line were fairly good much better than I had anticipated (2 big gullies + a few small dips) but the scrub was very heavy + difficult to cut – heavy wineberry, konini, etc etc up to 18 ft high entangled with lawyer + supplejacks. Our hands suffered considerably. Near the summit rata we saw some excellent hinau logs so the post quest may possibly be settled without great difficulties. In evening Clare, Dora, Ida + I spent pleasant eveing down to a party at Mrs Cork’s – met Drs Davies’ + Kennedys’ locum tenens, Drs Young +
