Overview
Leslie Adkin continues to work on his father's property, Cheslyn Rise, near Levin. Leslie often works on the farm with two labourers, Jim and Anstice. His father and younger brother Gil (Gilbert) also work on the farm.
Farming activities this month include fencing, crutching sheep, top dressing, digging drains, surveying, boundary and track cutting, and moving stock onto winter feed. Leslie also attends local stock sales.
Leslie continues to court Maud Herd, whom he visits at her family's home in Bruce Road, Levin. The Herd family's departure from the district draws closer after their home is sold this month.
In his spare time, Leslie reads novels, attends parties, dances, and lectures. He also goes roller skating and continues his interest in photography. The Levin Competitions are the district's social and cultural highlight of the month.
Ida Daniells, a friend of the Leslie's sisters, stays with the Adkin family for most of July. Towards the end of a busy month, Leslie is bed-ridden for several days with bronchitis.
