Mr John (Jock) Man Moreland (1921-2012 )

Topic

Overview

Curated the National Fish Collection held by the Dominion Museum and later the National Museum of New Zealand, during the years 1949-1981. Jock began a major fish collection project that launched the development of the NFC into a comprehensive resource. The electronic database records that he collected 4371 fishes in 988 lots, but the hand-written registers indicate the number was much higher.

The expansion of the size of the NFC in 1960’s onwards forced its relocation three times, first into the basement of the Buckle Street building, second to offsite storage at 135 Taranaki Street in 1986, and in 1999 to the current site at 169 Tory Street.
