Overview
Plants that have flowers are also known as angiosperms. Their seeds are produced in fruit, this being the fertilised product of a flower. Flowering plants are now the dominant group of land plants, with c. 200 000 species around the world.
New Zealand has c. 2000 native flowering species, of which c. 85% are only found in New Zealand. A similar number of exotic species have naturalised in New Zealand, and several times more again are cultivated (Wilton & Breitwieser 2000).
