Overview

Felton Mathew was New Zealand's first Surveyor General arriving on board the H.M.S. Herald with Captain Hobson in January 1840.

Some of the most significant entries in the diary relate to the background and actual signing of 'The Treaty of Waitangi' and subsequent events surrounding the signing.

The diary was acquired by The Dominion Museum in 1912, from Cathcart Wason (Member of Parliament - United Kingdom) through the High Commissioner in London; who received it as a gift from a Mr Harold Cox.

Felton Mathew's writings start on the dairies second page dated 8th January 1840 continuing for another 45 pages until August/September 1841.

From that date on it appears that the diary had several subsequent owners or authors who used it.
