Overview
Tues. Feb. 3.
Strong north-west wind during night but eased off to-day Out before breakfast + went south along beach – visited old native burial ground on extreme end of ridge overlooking Plimmerton – continued through "town" passed rly. stn. [railway station] over large st[rea]m. draining the large flat east of stn. + up the Pahautanui Road. Left Road + went past Watkin’s woolshed + over the stream (Tapu Creek) again at south end of artificial cut. The flat is crossed by numerous drains + the stream itself follows for the most part an artificial channel. The lower part of the flat consists of heavy sea-worn shingle + therefore seems to be of detaic [sic – likely "deltaic"] origin (I modified this opinion later). Proceeded north along the main drain (corrected stream channel) – further from the sea the flat consists of peat, several feet thick, evidently of swamp origin, overlying the sea-worn shingle. Crossed rly. + returned to house. After breakfast, measured two sections across beach, one through McKenzie's house over ridge to flat of Tutu Creek + the other over ridge at burial ground to centre of Plimmerton. Also make [sic] a drawing of faulted tilted greywacke and slate (Jura – Triassic) strata exposed in cutting of "The Extension" shore road just north of the saddle. The Strata stands at angles of from 67° to 90°, dip NW [north-west] by N, + is, in one place, even overturned, the

dip being 88°, SE [south-east] by E. Two faults are visible, one with a [hade?] of 61° (= dip 29°) + the other 70° (= dip 20°), both to the NW. In each case the displacement is 3 f[ee]t + the faults must be of the reversed or perhaps the overthrust type since in each case the movement is up the fault-plane, ie towards the SE. Got into conversation with a man who lives alongside + he pointed out to me the route of the future rly. round the coast-line to avoid crossing Pukerua saddle. Gertie, Nancy + I bathed in the same little bay as before. Photos (5) ¼ pl[ate]. Gertie, Nancy and self in bathing costume; (6) ¼ pl. Gertie, Nancy, Maude + Clyde on beach; (7) ¼ pl. general view of bathing place, Gertie + Nancy in foreground. After dinner took Gertie for a walk up the "sledge track" but she seemed to enjoy it so little that she will not get another invite. Photo (8) ¼ pl. McKenzie's house from front fence; (9) ¼ pl. verandah of house with Maude, Gertie + Nancy. Later took Maude up the hill road (Motuhara Road) Photos (10) + (11) ½ pan. Plimmerton Porirua Harbour +c [etc.] from "sledge track" (low tide) (12) ½ pl. telephoto of Plimmerton from same spot (low tide) We continued through the bush in the pretty, dry gully, past a house with wonderful stone walls, + then down a very winding road on cliff-top above "Somme House". Photo (13) ½ pl. from top of this cliff looking SW showing shore-platform + old sea-cliff.

Descended to "The Extension" + thence home. Took it easy rest of day – Clyde stood alone for ½ minute + was very proud of himself as we all were. Moonlit night.
