Overview
Thurs. Jan 1.
Weather still fine so strode up to Sonoma to burn scrub in gullies of Leighton Spur where I cut the tutu some time back. Moved rest of ewes & lambs from Mill to Leighton p[addock]. Fired scrub & got a splendid burn making a clean sweep of spurs and gullies between Leighton & Trunk Spurs & also the ferny[?] spurs in lower part of Grange p. – in latter place only narrow strips of tall scrub in gully bottoms left. I will now be able to grub out the roots of the tutu in Leighton p. Mustered the
2-tooth ewes (hoggets) from Top p. & put them together with some ewes & lambs into Grange p. Moved 6 steers from Top to 100 ac[re] p. making 20 there & saw the 19 in Mill p – this accounts for the missing one. Fired cut scrub alongside Ohau River fence. Drew maps [&c?] of Hatuma[?] district in evening. On way up river photo (1/2 pl[ate]) of river-cliff below head of water-races showing it to be composed of shingle from top to bottom. (This photo a failure)
