Overview
Wed. Nov. 5
Fine but still a south-west wind. Left at 8.45 on bike to cycle to Waipuk. taking altitudes en route – went via Maharakeke Road + the Tukituki gorge. Just south of the [Waiu?] Road junction there is a very big cut off loop of the Maharakeke – a dry trench some 30' in depth. At the lower bridge over the Maharakeke, the level of the plain is 15' above the bed of the stream + here the stream trench has no bordering terraces. Reached the saddle at the Pukeura Sanitorium at 9.42. + Waipuk rly. stn. at 10.24. Then rode along Racecourse Road – very gentle slopes on western side of

the high-level gravel ridge down to the edge of the lake (L. Hatuma). The level of the lake is about 428' above sea-level. It's northeast shore is low, being raised only 2' above the surface of the lake - the formation is grey papa. Wave erosion is still in progress + the outline of the shore is scalloped thus

Returned to town – visited Public Library [written above Waipuk. "invected margin"] (Waipuk. county offices in same building) Had afternoon tea + at 11.51 set out for the farm, going via Hatuma Road. Took altitudes en route – head wind most of the way. It seems certain that the original head of the Makotukutuku Stm. was at the "zig-zag" on the "M." road 1/2 mile north of the Rangitoto Road junction. On the "zig-zag" a low road cut shows a remarkable series of parallel thin-bedded strata – brown sandy bands up to 31/2 ft in thickness alternating with white bands ranging in thickness from a few inches up to 2ft. – these beds dip west at an angle of 50°. Altogether 33 alternations are visible. Home at 1.53. Changed + had pm. tea with family. Took two 1/4 pl. photos (10+11) of Grandma teaching Clyde to walk on front verandah + 1/4pl. of Maud, Olive, Alice + Nancy with Alice's Guy [Fawkes?]. Hugh returned from his holiday tour looking very fit.
