Overview
Sat. Feb. 1.
Clif drove me down to the 8:40 a.m. train + I arrived in Wgton [Wellington] soon after noon. Steady rain was falling + this lasted all day. Took a cab, first to the Union S.S Co's offices where I got a return saloon ticket (37/.) to Lyttelton
[Page break]
(+ also a berth ticket marked extra which I afterwards found meant a shake-down), + then drove to the S.I. [South Island] ferry wharf + put my bags on board the Mararoa. Dined in town + then spent pm. at Public Library delving into Geog Jnl [Geology Journal] + reading articles therein on physiography by Professor W. M. Davis. Heavy rain continued so had tea in town + after another spell at Library, walk to wharf + boarded Mararoa. During conversation with a friendly steward got a hint to see head steward re possible vacant berth + secured one. Cast off from wharf at 7:45 p.m. sea calm still raining. Large numbers of returned soldiers, ex Wiltshire on board.
