Over to Cheslyn Rise - continuedclearing + levelling in Gravel-pit p[addock] till midday. Clare droveFather + I to Levin in car + I caught the 3.15pm train to Wgton [Wellington]. Trammed up to PP [People's Palace] Hotel + after tea went to see "Lee Toy Chung" + Company in Grand Opera House. The item of the evening was the hypnotism by Prof. D'Almaine. About [a] dozen young fellows offered themselves as subjects + their actics were ludicrous + extraordinary. Under suggestion they were unable to unclasp hands - unable to clap hands together. They were shown (hypnotically) a sea-shore with gold among sand + frantically gathered it, filling pockets + trousers. They were shown butterflies worth []50 each + tried to capture them. Two fellows climbed up the bas-relief to boxes + then sprang across the 20ft drop to the dress circle. When brought round + foudn themselves in midst of

audience only half dressed they invariably rushed headlong out of sight. The final act was a hypnotic blacksmith's shop.
