The "Dominion" solved the mystery of yesterdays phenomena. Gigantic bush fires, destroying

the townships of Horopito + Raetihi, scores of sawmills + hundreds of farm buildings, were caused by the gale. Tremendous losses of stock, timber + other property resulted. The smoke from the conflagration travelled 200 miles + hampered navigation in Cook Strait + turned the day into night overa large past of the south of the North Island. Clif, Frank + I spent day repairing fences at Cheslyn Rise, putting in matai posts. Westerly wind + bursts of rain. Stayed at Cheslyn Rise to tea. Finished reading "The Armchair at the Inn" by Hopkinson Smith - an excellent + novel kind of tale.
